Bazil Gordon was connected to the 2nd Church (1815-1848) through the gift of the font which is still used today and for supporting the church by becoming a pew holder. He was a good example of wealth generated by merchants in the early American republic.

Approximately 250 people crowded into St. George’s on a cold, but clear night to hear a presentation of the Battle of Fredericksburg told through first person accounts.
McGuire attended the Virginia Diocese Conventions from 1814 until his death. The notes he wrote provide a glimpse into life at St. George’s in a period when we are missing many vital records, such as the Vestry Minutes.

Gen. Hugh Mercer (1726-1777) who owned the apothecary shop, served Washington at Trenton and later died at Princeton did not serve St. George’s on the Vestry but contributed in other ways. His son, Hugh Tennent Mercer (1776-1853) was on the Vestry and participated in the completion of the second church.
