Our Little Roses mission program in Honduras

St. George’s Mission program is our longest continuing mission program beginning with donations in the 1980s and then in 2003 with parishioners visiting the orphanage of Our Little Roses in San Pedro Sula. Teams visited from 2004-2009 but with political unrest and opportunities for mission elsewhere the program has seen declines. The church still makes regular gifts to OLR.

History is now Justice! 2011-16

“History is now!” Many historians avoid writing a history of recent times with the idea that there needs to be a period between the end of certain events and the writing of history. However, it is helpful for our time and later to make a stab at themes that run through the period

Such is the case from 2011-16. The thread running through the period is that St. George’s promotes justice and reconciliation. Justice involves promoting fairness that has been altogether missing. Justice for those felt the effects of racism (service on reconciliation), justice for those experience food insecurity (Table), justice for those who experience calamities (Haiti earthquake). In all of these the church builds relationships and provides steps which offer both hope and sustenance.

The Appalachian Youth Pilgrimage, 2008

It began at a rustic spot called Salt Log Camp, just off Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway. Thirty-two miles and 3 ½ days later, it ended on the upper reaches of the James River.

That was the late-July game plan for an Appalachian Trail pilgrimage that served as the “culminating experience” for seven youth members of St. George’s. There were plans for hiking, singing, playing and praying—a time, as team leader Nick Cadwallender put it, “to uncover and discover the people we are, where we have been, where we are going.”
