Edgar Woodward (1905-1990)

Woodward was from Akron Ohio a graduate of Ohio State and spent 33 years at Mary Washington College in the financed area. In 1950 he was the Bursar and by 1967 Comptroller. He served on the Vestry in the late 1950’s, 1960’s and into the 1970’s. Russ Roberts remembered him this way –  “The main thing I remember is that he was a marvelous mentor when I was senior warden. I think he was a vestryman multiple times”

In 1958 he was the clerk of the works, the chair of the Building Committee for McGuire Hall. This job handled all of the details of construction of McGuire Hall which was dedicated in 1959.  He was on the Vestry 1962-63 and served as convener of the Church Property Committee which was a forerunner of the current Buildings and Ground Commission.  He was part of the Family Room improvement project in those years.  This involved in part replacing the sleepers underneath the floor bidding $2,400.  He was interested in what is now planned giving and recommended to the Finance Committee to compile list of potential special gift contributors and recommend a committee to solicit for them. The Vestry intent was to have a group of two to call on those may be position for special gift.

He also served the Vestry in 1965. By 1969, he was Senior Warden and served without title in 1970.

Outside of St. George’s, he served in Kiwanis, a past president and also served on Fredericksburg’s City Recreation Board.
