Thomas Moore specs for Decorative Paint in the Renovation 2008-2011

-General Design Scheme

General:

  • It was agreed not to reproduce the 1906 ornamental scheme.
  • It was agreed that the use of lettering in the form of “Chi-Ro”, “H.I.S.”, “Alpha-Omega”, etc., be avoided.
  • Crosses, where used as a component of ornament, will be in subtle context.
  • Of the ornament presented, the ornamental styles preferred were those of traditional Revived Romanesque themes, to be rendered architecturally.
  • Graphic ornamental schemes reflecting the committee input will be submitted in pictorial form for approval. This submittal will indicate the intended architectural placement of the ornament.
  • All finish & ornamental options presented are to reflect the current budget.

Chancel:

  • Deep red field with “powdering” of crosses in gold (paint or leaf) on three elevations approved.
  • Chancel ceiling will be in creme/gold colour.
  • “Ascension” window (3) will be outlined architecturally in “white “paint against the red field, without graphic ornamental embellishment.
  • Colour scheme for rooms above the Chancel visible from Nave will be developed.

Nave:

  • Ceiling will be painted in submitted blue with “gold” paint border.
  • Ceiling beams and lower architrave below balcony handrail will be architecturally polychromed -“picked out” to make them more visible.
  • Arches will be outlined architecturally in white paint, as in Chancel.
  • Arch soffit embellishment will be submitted in pictorial form.
  • Upper & lower column capitals will be polychromed similarly in metallic and glazed finishes.
  • Column shafts will be coloured lighter than walls.
  • Submitted range of wall colour approved.
  • Submitted range of dado and dado ornamental colours approved.
  • Ornamental placement of dado cap in relation to stained glass windows (ornament to be placed higher than lowest horizontal edge of window) approved.
  • Painted frieze ornament & placement will be submitted in pictorial form for approval, (see next item)
  • The North East & South East upper corners of the Nave (just below the ceiling) present some challenges due to the fact that the frieze placement lines do not all meet at the same planar position. Options for these areas will be submitted in pictorial form for approval.

Side Aisle. Ground Level:

  • Submitted range of dado and dado ornamental colours and type of ornamental decoration approved.
  • Ornamental placement of dado cap in relation to stained glass windows (ornament to be placed higher than lowest horizontal edge of window) approved.
  • Underside of balcony will be a light creme paint colour.

Balcony:

  • Ceiling will be creme colour.
  • Existing tin relief frieze molding will not be accentuated.
  • Painted frieze placement will be submitted in pictorial form for approval.
  • Walls will be same colour as Nave, or darker.
  • Balcony metal balustrade “fence” will be chromatically accentuated but not glazed or gilded.

Narthex & Ancillary Rooms:

  • Simplified but anticipatory colour palette. The intention will be to subtly “foretell” the colours in the nave.
  • Consider introducing original (1906) dado cap ornament, not necessarily in original colours.

Conclusion:

The input we received from the committee will allow us to fine-tune the colour and graphic ornamental content for the following submittal.

Approval of the submitted schemes will allow us to proceed to the next phase of design; Primary field colour samples and full-scale colour mockups of intended ornament.
